China and the U.S. Reach Key Consensus; Talks Make Substantive Progress

High-level China-U.S. economic and trade talks were held in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 10 to 11. He Lifeng, China's lead representative for economic and trade affairs and Vice Premier of the State Council, said at a press conference hosted by the Chinese delegation on the evening of the 11th that the talks were candid, in-depth, and constructive, reaching key consensus and making substantive progress. The two sides agreed to establish a China-U.S. economic and trade consultation mechanism and will finalize relevant details as soon as possible, releasing a joint statement on the outcomes of the talks on May 12.

He Lifeng noted that under current circumstances, the talks have attracted significant international attention. Through joint efforts, the talks were fruitful, marking an important step toward resolving differences through equal dialogue and consultation, and laying the foundation and creating conditions for further bridging gaps and deepening cooperation.

He emphasized that China-U.S. economic and trade relations are crucial not only to both countries but also to global economic stability and development. China is willing to work with the U.S. to actively implement the important consensus reached in the phone conversation between the two heads of state on January 17, engage in candid dialogue, equal consultation, and manage differences with a pragmatic attitude focused on solving problems. The two sides should tap into cooperation potential, expand the cooperation agenda, and broaden the scope of collaboration to promote new progress in China-U.S. economic and trade ties, injecting more certainty and stability into the global economy.
